Pellambrans
This is an alien race of limited number, but whose power is so extreme as to make individual members of the race equivalent to high end Beta class variants, and members of the royal family members are equivalent to Epsilon class variants. They were key members of the Galactic Council for centuries, until a civil war erupted among them, with members of the Royal Family attempting to dominate the entire Galactic Alliance and conquer all the races associated within ita mad plan that came entirely too close to succeeding. Few details of this war are known, as it had minimal impact on Earth, regardless of its repercussions elsewhere.
We do know that it began centuries ago, when Mortius, second son of the Pellambran emperor, rallied other members of the Byzantine Pellambran royal houses for a coup, planning on restoring the Pellambrans to their former glory (apparently, the Pellambran empire had once conquered many of the races that are now part of the Galactic Council, before a similar coup removed the royal house and replaced it with the more benevolent current rulership. Since Pellambrans are effectively immortal, the change in governing style persists to this day, millennia later). This bloody internal war quickly ruptured outward, and has affected Council politics for some time, with several council races becoming willing vassals or unwilling conquests of Mortius and his forces.
The Pellambran situation has touched on Earth history twice in recorded memory (skipping the Pellambran claims of being the gods of Greek and Egyptian mythany disturbing similarities have to be dismissed by the rational mind). The first of these didn't directly involve any Pellambrans, and is discussed in the entry for the Galactic Council.
The second Pellambran contact was in late 1969. Council forces, at the cusp of victory 15 years earlier, were now hovering on the verge of defeat. Mortius, his initial power base destroyed, had made pacts with forces beyond this universe. They had provided him with Daemon troops to overrun the galaxy, and he had used these to turn the tide of battle against his enemies. The Galactic Council forces had fallen, and happened to be using the Sol system as a refueling base (drawing needed elements from the gas giants). A battle occurred in the system , accidentally drawing into it the variant hero team the Aquarians.
The Aquarians offered their assistance to the Galactic Council, allying themselves with the Pellambran Princess Athena in a desperate last gamble: voyaging to the center of the Universe to make contact with 'the core of love and life itself,' awakening it. Once awakened, the 'lovecore' acted, washing the taint of Mortius' daemon troops from the universe in a blast of pure love and rainbow lights (an event that the sentient beings remember as a flash of light and a feeling of glorious power lasting just seconds, only to discover that 77 hours had passed during that instant, with no explanation). The Aquarians returned to Earth, assured we would return when we 'passed into the next threshold of consciousness.' (Hey, it was the 60's. Cut them some slack.)
These events are not common knowledge on Earth, though several government 'shadow cabinets' have bits and pieces of the stories. None of those who have returned from these missions have spoken of them to the general populace. There are rumors of other Pellambran contacts, from the 'Greek god' theory mentioned earlier to Pellambran origins for some supposed variants, to the supposed existence of a probe hidden on Earth designed to find and empower Earth's first ambassador to the Galactic Council when discovered.
Pellambrans possess the ability to generate and manipulate Celestial Energy, making the royal family ageless and virtually immortal, superhuman in all abilities, able to survive and communicate in space, and fly at either near light or hyperspace speeds. Conventional Pellambrans posses these abilities as well, but at significantly lower levels; they are ageless but not immortal, for example. Each Pellambran has other powers based on the manipulation of Celestial Energy, determined by their life's focus and training; the versatility of this power source is unmatched. Pellambran technology is millennia more advanced than any other member of the Council, which are millennia more advanced than Earth.
Some members of the current Pellambran ruling house have a disturbing similarity to the gods and creatures of Greek myth. Some Pellambrans claim to have visited Earth and founded those stories, but the odds of that are remote to say the least, and the Pellambrans in question are not exactly trustworthy. Most prominent of these Pellambrans is Athena, mentioned above in the Lovecore incident. Dimensional travelers have stated that they have encountered Athena on Earth in a parallel universe, where she has become a member of one of that Earth's super-teams.
Before the war there were perhaps one billion Pellambrans in the universe; now there are little over 10 million. They have removed themselves from an active position in the Council, and instead act as advisors only, and infrequently at that. Whether they will ever interact with Earth again is unknown.
