The Moon of Janik

The headquarters of the Three Trees shipping company is here. It is part of a very large system, with 12 planets orbiting a central sun. Most are populated, and there is a great deal of in-system trade, which means the bolder sort of pirate lurking about various moons and asteroid clusters. This system has standard, fixed stars on the inside of the sphere. v

Janik is one of the three moons orbiting Maekalan; the other two are uninhabitable rocks. Maekalan is almost entirely forested on its land masses; there is a large elven population here and lesser communities elsewhere in the system, so there is an armada in-system. There are centaurs and a relatively small human population on the planet as well.

The 3 Trees Board
Contains only humans at this point in time, a hotly contested point. Ten plus a chairman make up the highest rank of the company. Most of them are related; rarely does a non-family member get a seat. They determine strategy, major alliances, and make appointments to important posts such as Bral. The chairman breaks ties and has extensive veto powers. When a vacancy comes up, candidates are nominated. Selection is by vote among the highest echelons of the company; not quite democratic, but board members are answerable to their various departments if they screw up, and public pressure is sometimes taken into account.

The Volant branch, all cousins:
Davin Volant
Roland Volant (Sidney of Bral is his nephew)
Hulda Volant

The Jorstoians:
Ivan Jorstoian - current chairman, surrounded by rumors of corruption (they always are) Smokes a pipe.
Alexandra Jorstoian - his daughter
Marten Jorstoian - nephew (parents not board members)
Viktoria Jorstoian - sister
Tobias Jorstoian - brother

The Rest:
Alvar Nansen
Karolina Nansen
Erling Staffen (only non-family member)

The Library
Home to the company records, watched over by master librarians. The Masters have studied for decades before being admitted to service in the Hall of Records; they're an egalitarian, almost monkish group. The Library is grim and forbidding on the outside, but contains a pleasant, sunny courtyard. The books are kept in small rooms that face the inner yard, and are divided by subject matter. The actual ship's logs and other rare items are kept in vaults below, spell-guarded against fire, water, and theft. Red-bound books are copies of log entries that pertain to the subject at hand.

The Thieves Guild
The thieves guild of Janik is small and keeps an almost invisibly low profile; their cant is particularly opaque, and their signs are left only in places not visible from the street, often on roof tiles. The Board does not hesitate to make examples, and amateurs usually don't last long. There is, still, some market for stolen goods, planted evidence, and the occasional assassination. There are a couple of rastipedes willing to launder goods and money. Members are, of course, known by nicknames like Lefty, Stoat, Red, etc.
