A troubled and rebellious youth, Rick spent the first half of his teen years drifting from town to town in the Southwest, trying to avoid the juvenile authorities and doing menial work when he could get it. At age 16, after getting his driver's license and a car, he rode into the desert where it was rumored than an atomic bomb was going to be tested. Rick managed to hide out on the test site and witnessed the detonation of Dr. Bruce Banner's gamma bomb. Incredibly, Rick was not killed. He suffered only minor burns and staggered undetected away from the test site. Days later, his superhuman powers emerged. Rick has since made his way to New York City, unsure what to do with his future but certain that something will present itself in the Big Apple.
