Phoenix Talon, completely exhausted, slept.
It was a summer day in Massapequa, New York. The perfect, eternal summer vacation day, when a child attains the kind of warm freedom they will never know again. John was out in the backyard. The sun was perfect, the breeze like a bath of pleasure.
In his right hand was a magnifying glass. In his left was the Toyman, just 12 inches tall.
The sun shone mightily on the little backyard.
Phoenix Talon slept, and smiled.
