The Revolution
After the Daemonwar the absence of Ground Zero left New England,
with the highest concentration of variant activity in the United
States, virtually defenseless against variant crime. The government
responded by redistributing funds formerly slated for Grand Zero to the
New England and New York. Each state was to use these funds to hire,
recruit, equip and fund a statewide variant team for handling of
variant criminal activity. In Massachusetts, the task fell to Senator
Edward Ellis, a former defense attorney who had a reputation for taking
on high-risk projects, either as cases or now as political
causes.
Ellis quickly recruited a trio of inexperienced heroes, promising them
long hours, governmental difficulties, funds tied up in committee and
indifferent public opinion. But at least the pay was lousy. Ellis kept
his promises, but after a rocky first quarter the Revolution has hit
its stride. The team's first few months involved conflicts with local
organized crime, Tech, Lord Fimbulwinter,
Traveler, and the Wuxia. Branded outlaws for
a short while, they bounced back into their highest ratings yet. With
their newfound fame, Aggolomorated Megafoods Inc. is courting them for
licensing.
Despite the calls from the budget hawks, the Revolution is far from
over-funded or over-equipped. Most of their advanced technology is on
loan from New Horizons, and their 'state-of-the-art' headquarters
is an abandoned Coast Guard island barracks in Boston Harbor. Some
senators see anything but minimal finding of variant teams as a waste,
viewing the government funds as barely sufficient to cover the
'damages this group of dangerous under-trained misfits produce.'
Such opponents find a ready ally in the broadcasts and columns of
Holly Shapiro, a prominent Boston-area pundit and
journalist.
Needle
Sasha Banks is the perceived leader of the Revolution, despite her
continued attempts to duck this role. She is calm, level headed and, if
not thrilled to deal with the media, able to interact with the press
and the government with her temper intact. Needle's powers are
biokinetic in natureshe can manipulate and control biological
processes in herself or others. She is also telekinetic, though this
talent is much greater when manipulating living organisms rather than
inorganic weight. Sasha is a highly trained pilot with a degree in
physics, serving as the team's transport and sometimes scientist.
Needle shares a remarkable likeness with the villainess Tempest, a fact
that the media has yet to notice.
Luck (Lucky Charm)
Kyla McKay is superhumanly strong and durable, possessing greater than
normal senses and training in armed and unarmed combat. She is also
outfitted with a pair of gloves that produce a variety of weapons from
magical energy, which she uses to block incoming attacks and absorb
damage. Holly Shapiro recently announced Kyla's past as an enforcer
for the New York Mafia, as well as her assault on local businessman
Vincent Guliani. She had received amnesty from her previous crimes for
actions in the wake of the Daemonwar, and performs community work at a
children's shelter for the latter. She has some relationship with the
missing persons specialist Chandler Prentice, and recently left Boston with him to pursue a mission of unknown nature but certain import.
Phoenix Talon
John Astaverdia is the most vocal, outgoing and 'typical
super-hero' of the Revolution members. A graduate of the University
of Houston's Variant Studies program, he wears a flashy skin tight
costume and mounts anti-gang patrols. Phoenix Talon is an expert
martial artist with training in Ninjitsu and a variance that generates
blinding flashes of light. He is loud and cocky, taunting his opponents
and boasting of his own prowess, which combines with his flashy combat
style to make him the a favorite of local teens. He carries a metal
Bokken (practice Katana) rigged with an electrical charge. John just
returned from a vacation in Japan after events surrounding the
Revolution's defeat of a brutal street vigilante.
Scott Silver
Scott is a sentient mass of Plovian liquid super-conducting metal
created by Dr. Jeffry Scott. Scott can absorb any EM energy and alter
his body's density by altering its electrical charge. Despite his
youth and innocence (he is still under a year 'old') he is stable,
mature and in many ways nostalgic, wishing that his chosen career of
Costumed Hero were more like the pre-war days he has studied for his
entry into a Variant Studies program. Charming in his innocence, Scott
has a habit of expecting to see, and therefore bringing out, the best
in people. He prefers his liquid form and is usually a large sliver
blob, though he can take on a solid humanoid form for formal occasions.
Dr. Albert Gabriel Smith
After a brief and disastrous period as a field agent for the
Revolution, which ended with him being tossed four city blocks by a
giant robot, Albert has taken a position as the team's in-house back
up and researcher. A brilliant forensic psychologist and advocate of
human potential (and French culture!), Dr. Smith is a master mesmerist,
capable of making people see, hear and feel what he wishes. He is known
to be somewhat ruthless in his applications of this power.
Promethean
Originally Ellis was thrilled at the transfer of this super-hero from
the Black Watch, hoping that
Promethean's superior field experience would stabilize the team. This
was true for a time. Then the Teutonic hero went mad while fighting his
younger brother, and the resultant carnage cut a swath through Boston.
Promethean has since disappeared. His powers were based around plasma
generation, and included flight, a protective field, and plasma blasts.
Thunderbolt
Captain Paul Sutton (retired) brings both considerable training and raw power to the team. In addition to the experience from his years of field operations, largely in Europe, as part of the Naval Ingelligence unit Majestic 12, he is capable of several forms of energy absorption and control and is an expert with conventional weaponry and hand-to-hand combat, making him a formidable opponent. Somewhat shy and quiet when it comes to his personal life and particularly around women, he is thoroughly at home with the role of hero to the public and has quickly become an invaluable part of the Revolution.
